Copyright is the legal protection given to original literary, dramatic, musical or artistic work, sound recordings, films and broadcasts. Copyright automatically exists the moment a work is created.
Copyright means that an original work can only be copied with the copyright owner's permission, and it applies to any medium.
Uniquely, copyright only protects the finished work, not the idea for it, and the right is automatic - there is no unified system of registration of copyright in the UK. Generally speaking, copyright protection will only ever protect the expression of the idea and not the idea itself i.e. copyright protection will protect the words in a book but not necessarily the story the words tell you.
Understanding copyright and using it effectively will enable you to sell your copyright, licence it or gain commercially from exploitation of your work.
In general, as in the UK, copyright protection does not require any specific formalities. However, there are some countries where protection only arises from registration with a special registry.
